The resources in this section provide some key pointers to support the effective teaching of spelling. Secondary teachers often tell us that this is not an area of confidence and we are available for training, staff-meetings, spelling audits and small group/1:1 support.

This is a primary resource showing ten strategies for over-learning spellings. Some of these spelling strategies may continue to be helpful for older students for some words that they have identified as personal pit-falls. These over-learning strategies are quite likely to be familiar to students.
This is an example of a diagnostic marking grid that can be used to identify where a student's individual spelling weaknesses lie and the possible barriers that are holding them back from correct spelling.

The examples given here have been created by primary colleagues but the principles work well for secondary school pupils in building both strong spelling and vocabulary knowledge.
