Planning learning journeys
The HIAS approach to planning learning journeys inspired by rich texts includes sequenced opportunities to:
- immerse children in the world of the text they are reading
- develop ideas and understanding of the content they will write about
- grow their vocabulary
- explore exemplar texts
- explicitly teach and deliberately practice elements of writing at sentence level and paragraph level
- model, share and guide writing
- draft, review and edit writing.
Examples of planning
Please find below some examples of planning following the HIAS learning journey approach. These plans have been created by HIAS English advisers during their work in schools. They are specific to the cohort and therefore based on prior learning and AfL. The plans uploaded here are ones that we know have become popular in schools.
If you are interested in using the model and want more examples, a number of learning journeys with guidance materials are available for each year group, including a growing collection of planning for mixed-age classes, through subscription to Moodle+ .
KS1
This year, we have been updating our learning journey planning guidance for Year 1 in the light of the recommendations from The Writing Framework, placing a much stronger emphasis on transcription elements and keeping sequences shorter and more accessible so that children are asked to do less, but do it better.
The Boy Who Sailed The World learning journey is in the new style and follows the planning approach we now recommend to schools - there are more like this within Moodle+.
The Three Little Pigs learning journey is one of our older plans which continues to be used in some schools and is still a popular text driver.
How to Wash a Woolly Mammoth is a learning journey leading to instruction writing that has proved popular with staff and pupils alike.
