Literacy
While English is an intensively literacy-powered subject, literacy across the curriculum is not the sole responsibility of the English department: if students do not use full stops and capital letters with accuracy in science, or forget to write in paragraphs in geography, or struggle to read and understand challenging academic texts in history, these issues are not to be blamed on the English team, nor are the English team expected to fix them. Every subject area is responsible for teaching the students in their lessons the literacy that is required to enable them to succeed in that subject.
That said, English teachers often do take a leading role in developing whole school literacy. Equally, English teachers are responsible for the aspects of literacy that are required for students to succeed in English. Resources in this section explore both of these strands.
