Securing Strong Foundations in Writing: Sentences and Paragraphs Across the Primary Phase – 11 November 2026 and 4 February 2027 

Unlock composition at sentence and paragraph level – build subject knowledge and confidence in effective methods of teaching sentence structure, punctuation and paragraphs from the ground up.

All schools will be aware of the renewed emphasis on the importance of securing foundational skills and knowledge in all recent publications and advice from the DfE and Ofsted – this course is part of the HIAS offer focusing on how to ensure that pupils acquire and grow the fundamentals of writing across the primary age range.

This two-session course enables primary teachers and English subject leaders to develop effective practice in their own classes and across the primary school, including providing support for those pupils who need additional help to secure their sentence grammar, punctuation and paragraphing. The training explores progression in these areas from the foundations within KS1 to cohesive and varied writing at KS2.
