The crucial importance of supporting struggling readers to master the fundamental skill of reading has been highlighted widely by Ofsted and the DfE over recent years, particularly since the publication of the 2019 OFSTED Education Inspection Framework and in recent blogs setting out how inspectors will explore with schools how they provide intervention and support for struggling readers to close the gap with their peers. The need for secondary schools to address gaps in phonics and early reading where these are holding back pupils in their access to the curriculum has never been more clearly prioritised.

For many secondary school teachers, leaders and learning support assistants – perhaps for the majority – subject and pedagogical knowledge in phonics and early reading is a gap in their own training. Few of us have had systematic training in how to teach children to read from the very beginning and therefore we can be ill-equipped to support those readers who struggle the most.

Focus of this course:

  • To develop subject knowledge in phonics and early reading and understand the principles of effective practice in phonics teaching and intervention.

Who the course is aimed at:

  • The course assumes no prior knowledge and is therefore suitable for a range of secondary teaching and support staff, including English and dedicated reading teachers, learning support assistants who will be delivering reading interventions, SENCOs and leaders of whole school reading.
