Phonics is the most effective way to teach children to read and high-quality daily phonics provision is crucial for every primary school. All children in Year R to Year 2 should be taught to read using a systematic synthetic phonics programme, and all children who have not yet secured phonic decoding further up the primary school should be supported through intervention to help them to learn to read effectively.
HIAS provides support to infant, junior and primary (and secondary!) schools in developing effective provision for phonics. We run a highly effective programme of support for selected schools each year, the Phonics Progress Partnership, which has helped schools to make significant improvements to their phonics outcomes. It is crucial for teachers and leaders to be confident in understanding all of the aspects of administration of the Phonics Screening Check, including receipt and storage of the resources, preparing the room where checks will take place, administering the checks and managing the resources and assessments after the checks have taken place. It is the Headteacher's responsibility to ensure that all participating staff fully understand their part in how the checks must be run.
