  • COVID-19 and Summer/Autumn term training

    Our training will continue to be delivered online this summer but we are making plans to resume face to face training in the Autumn term. Once Autumn courses are available to book on the Learning Zone they will be identified as follows:

    • Webinar – virtual training via Microsoft Teams
    • Blended – courses that are a mixture of virtual and face to face training
    • No categorisation – venue based training

    • Primary English Core Provision 2021/22

      Our Primary English Core Provision offer for Hampshire schools provides opportunities for subject leaders to work collaboratively through a series of subject network meetings and an annual conference. Content is shaped to reflect national and local priorities ensuring our subject leaders are best placed to reflect on current guidance.  

      In 2021-22 the Core Provision offer includes:

      • two Primary headteacher and subject leader strategic planning and update meetings (to be delivered virtually)
      • four half-day subject leader meetings (delivered as a blend of face to face and virtual meetings)
      • a full day Primary English conference (for subject leaders).

      Our programme
      This year we are offering 16 district based English programmes. Please refer to the English and Maths Core Provision Overview 2021-22 document below for details of the different programmes with information about session dates and times. Please check this carefully before booking to identify the programme relevant to your school’s geographical area.

      Our Core Provision programmes can be booked via the Learning Zone. Search

English Core Test Valley 21/22. Please note the different booking instructions depending on whether you are booking yourself on a programme or are acting in the capacity of a delegated manager and are making the booking on behalf of another staff member.       Building Vocabulary in Primary English (Webinar) - 23 September and 14 October 2021

      English subject knowledge and pedagogy for Teaching Assistants (Webinar) starting 27 September 2021

      Developing Fluency and Stamina in Reading 21-22 (Webinar) – starting 27 September 2021

      Understanding Reading Ages – Implications for Teaching across the Curriculum (Webinar) - 28 September 2021

      The majority of secondary schools run some form of reading age testing and share reading age data with teachers, but this information is not always well understood by teachers beyond the understanding that some students find reading more difficult than others.  This webinar aims to take you beyond the data to a more detailed understanding of what it means to have a reading age of 6, or 9, or 17, and how to adapt teaching in the classroom to support readers at all levels.

      Phonics and Early Reading in Junior Schools – Meeting the Needs of the Lowest 20% (Webinar) – 11 October, 16 November, 7 December 2021 and 25 January 2022

      Early reading has a prominent position within the new OFSTED Education Inspection Framework (September 2019).       Accelerating the Progress of Children with SEND in Reading 2021-22 (Webinar) - 20 October & 23 November 2021

      The course will provide delegates with secure knowledge of how children learn to read. This will include approaches to develop fluency and reading stamina.

      We will explore the areas of difficulty that some children may have during the reading process and strategies to address these.

      Hampshire Spelling Project (Webinar) – 11 November, 24 November 2021, 25 January and 1 March 2022

      The Hampshire Spelling Project is now due to run for its fourth year and will this year also focus on supporting schools looking to consolidate key focus areas and address gaps in learning.  This project brings together schools from across the county where an increase in spelling scores would directly impact both SPaG and writing outcomes. Schools will receive CPD aimed at developing whole school approaches to spelling and receive two interactive and practical sessions from a school achieving strong spelling results in KS2.
