Spring Term 2020
Addressing the issue of boys’ (under)achievement in primary English, this one-day course explores practical strategies and approaches to maximise progress and attainment for all pupils. Delegates will focus on how to make best use of the Hampshire SEND planning tool which will support bespoke provision for SEND pupils who are unlikely to have completed the relevant programmes of study when they reach the appropriate chronological age. A course for English leaders wishing to improve spelling in their school and class teachers who wish to improve their approaches to the teaching of spelling. This course will support teachers in adapting teaching to meet the needs of pupils with SEND in the secondary English classroom (and in reading and writing across the secondary curriculum) in order to increase, track and celebrate pupil progress. Session 1 will focus on reading; session 2 will focus on writing and spelling. These two half-day sessions will provide delegates with practical approaches to closing the vocabulary gap in in primary English. The focus will be on embedding effective vocabulary, building into English learning journeys and developing targeted intervention and pre-teaching for pupils with significant word gaps. This course will provide the CPD required for effective implementation of the recently-launched Reading for Comprehension Toolkit materials across the primary phase. Schools will need to have purchased the relevant toolkits before attending the course and delegates will need to complete a gap task using the resources before the second session. Further info on the toolkits and how to purchase them can be found here. Termly meetings to provide updates, advice and networking opportunities for secondary English subject leaders. Throughout the year, delegates will have the opportunity to hear from guest speakers and Hampshire advisers on a range of issues and to engage in workshops led by Hampshire English leaders and teachers. Delegates on this course will explore the areas of difficulty that some children may have during the writing process and practical strategies to address these. This course will focus on the teaching of Letters and Sounds from phase 1 through to phase 6 for Year R and Key Stage 1 children. The course will provide delegates with secure knowledge of how children learn to read. This will include approaches to develop fluency and reading stamina as well as opportunities to reflect on the needs of a child they are teaching and create a bespoke plan to support them.Addressing the Gender Gap in Primary English - 14 January 2020
